Earthquake Recording Instrument
An accelerograph can be referred to as a strong-motion instrument or seismograph, or simply an earthquake accelerometer. Accelerographs are useful for when the earthquake ground motion is so strong that it causes the more sensitive seismometers to go off-scale. It can be integrated into an alarm system to alert people in a building when an earthquake occurs and prevent secondary disaster by shutting down power systems (lights, elevator, etc). Data gathered after an earthquake is vital to Structural Engineers to determine if structures are able to withstand future earthquakes or are in need of retrofitting.
